What are the costs associated?
Having a beautiful paver patio makes a statement. It can change the mood and tempo of your home, giving you that perfect zen spot to hangout and invite people over. Hardscaped patios are a low maintenance option that can also embody your artistic side and uniqueness.
Whatever your reason for wanting a beautiful hardscape, many people are interested in knowing what the investment is on a paver patio. Here, we'll break that down and help you make your decision.
Chances are, unless you've just built your home (and congratulations if you did!), you probably have a small builder grade patio pad or maybe even a deck. One of the hidden costs that are potentially associated with getting a new paver patio is the demolition of an existing structure. Even though it may seem trivial, it is an added cost.
How much can you expect to pay for this?
If you have an old deck that needs to come out it can involve taking a sawzall or a circular saw and cutting it apart. It can also mean bringing in an excavator and tearing it down. Most decks, unless they're over 350 square foot can be demo'd in a day. This can cost you anywhere from 5500-3500$ for a licensed and insured contractor.
Most of the cost will be labor, but don't forget that waste has to go to the dump and dump fees are typically at least 400$.
What does a paver patio cost?
Paver patio's can vary in price, whether you're in Geist Lake, IN Long Lake, IN Carmel, IN or Fort Wayne, IN, location can make a difference because of the market you are in, but this can serve as a great resource to get you in the right ballpark.
Building the foundation
In most cases it will take a mini-skid loader or a backhoe to excavate the site. Your contractor has to weigh the expanse of this in his bid. These machines and operators are costly and this plays an important part in getting a long lasting install.
The reason I bring this up is because access has a large part to do in how long it will take to install a paver patio.
Professional grade materials are a key part to ensuring your patio lasts for years to come. This can mean the difference between a patio that lasts 5 years with big box store pavers that are only 2-3 inches thick, or a 25+ year patio with a professional grade paver that is 4 inches or more. The price difference between these can be pretty crazy. A big box store paver might start at 1.49$ a square foot, while the most basic professional paver is typically around 6.00$ a square foot.
When you add stone base, paver sand, polymeric sand, and other miscellaneous supplies the materials cost for a professional paver patio could be anywhere from 40$ a square foot to 11$ a square foot on average.
This is where a majority of the investment goes in a good paver patio. It takes time to create an intricate and beautiful product. From setting the pavers and ensuring that the screed is nice and flat, to cutting curves, inlays, and soldier courses the human element plays a heavy role in these activities.
Because there are so many factors it can be hard to pinpoint exactly where you will be, but we can give you a general range to help you get a ballpark of where you might fall.
For complex projects with soldier courses and inlays, you can expect to pay anywhere from 70-60$ a square foot.
For installs with medium difficulty, maybe you want a single soldier course on the boarder only, or a few curves hear and there, you can expect to invest 60-50$ a square foot.
For your basic installs with 1 color and paver style and little elevation change, you can expect to pay around 50-45$ a square foot for labor.
To sum it up, paver patios are much more than some formed concrete that can be put on the dirt and be forgotten about. Typically these installs involve heavy machinery, operators, lots of different and wide ranging materials costs, labor, and overhead that must be considered.
The high end paver installations may cost you anywhere from 120$ a square foot for all the bells and whistles.
The luxury paver installation with some of the bells and whistles could demand an investment of 90-75$ a square foot
Basic paver patios that are still beautiful and that are still a great low maintenance option may call for a 70-55$ a square foot investment.
On a 400 square foot patio the numbers could look something like this:
High-End patio : 48,000-40,000$
Luxury patio : 36,000-30,000$
Basic Patio : 28,000-22,000$
